You’ve found the perfect place, signed the dotted line and unpacked the moving truck. As you’re breathing in a sigh of relief, it’s time to move onto the next step: turning your new house into your new home. That might take a while to build up to, but we’d like to share some of the starting points that will help get you started.
- Personalize each room
Personalization can be everything from a picture of your family on the shelf to painting the wall a different color. As simple or complex as you make it, these personalized pieces help you adapt to the new environment quicker and easier. It can also make the rest of the moving in experience more enjoyable and fun.
- Divide and conquer
You can’t handle the entire move yourself. Enlist the help of friends and family to help with whatever they are able to do. Simple tasks, like rinsing glasses or cleaning countertops, will help ease the stress of finishing everything quickly.
- Go over the home inspector’s findings
Your initial review of their report must have been satisfactory, but now that you have a moment, go over the minor details of the findings. If there are small fixes that you can do to make your house safer and repairs cheaper in the long run, take some time to do them now while they’re still fresh in your mind. You could also do a walk-through yourself to determine what needs a closer inspection, such as locks, entrances and windows.
- Address changes on all forms
You will need to complete a change of address form with the post office, update your address with bank / insurance / credit cards and transfer your utilities. The quicker all these changes are done, the less likely mail and important information will get lost in its path to you.
- Explore the new area
Your house will feel more like a home when you get familiar with more than just the immediate area. Introduce yourself to new neighbors, check out the closest stores and drive around town to familiarize yourself with the setting.
After your home feels more like your own, you’ll find the adjustment period will be easier and quicker. If you’re still looking for a new house, contact a RE/MAX Showcase agent for help through every step of the way.
